Living on the Edge πŸ™ 😰 πŸ›—

Afraid of heights?

View of the Edge (The Edge is the rectangle sticking out near the top. If you look closely you can see people).

There is a relatively new collection of buildings in NYC called Hudson Yards, and there is an experience there called the Edge, the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere. An elevator zips you up 1,100 feet where you can walk out, onto and around a platform surrounded by glass walls, and feel like you are on the edge. The elevator ride was probably the most uncomfortable part of the experience. It’s disorienting to speed great distances without the ability to see what is going on around you. The walls of the elevator showed moving images that did not match the speed or motion of the elevator ride up. There are no buttons inside the elevator, so riders really have no way of telling where they are or how much further the ride is.

There is one small clear portion of the viewing platform floor that you can stand on and look straight down. Honestly, it’s not a very exciting view but many people pose on top of it, like this couple taking a selfie.⬇️

I am so happy I did this and recommend it to anyone visiting NYC who wants amazing views. One of the reasons I wanted to do this was to check out another (and much scarier) experience offered at this location called the City Climb. This involves getting to the Edge where you are then outfitted in climbing clothes, attached to fall protection, and then led on an open-air ascent of the building to the top and a viewing edge that most people lean out over. I’ll definitely be waiting for warmer weather to try that.

There are two levels to the viewing platform and this was taken from the higher one looking down.

Subway Art Tour (another NYC activity)

Find the highest building near you that you can access and take the elevator up and look out. (If you are in great shape, maybe skip the elevator:)

Are you making plans for your list of 50 Things for 2023? When I first started 50 Things, I created an ebook planner to help others get started. If you’d like to give it a try, you can download it here.

I have dozens of ideas for my own 2023 list but I’d love to hear more suggestions and hear your ideas as well.
